The formula to calculate FD maturity amount

You can choose between two different forms of FDs: simple interest FDs and compound interest FDs. The fixed deposit calculator computes simple interest FDs using the following formula:

M= P + (P x r x t/100), where

P is the amount you deposit as the principal
The annual interest rate is denoted by r
T is the tenure

The FD return calculator uses the following formula for compound interest FD:

Where M is equal to P + P {(1 + i/100) t – 1}.

P represents the principal
I is the interest rate for every period,
and T indicates the tenure

Tax Benefits on Fixed Deposits

Regular FDs don’t provide direct tax breaks on the principal amount invested. However, there are tax implications for the interest you earn:

Tax on Interest: The interest earned on your FD is considered taxable income and gets added to your “Income from Other Sources.”

TDS Deduction: Banks deduct TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) on the interest income if it exceeds â‚ą40,000 (â‚ą50,000 for senior citizens) in a financial year.

Tax-Saving FDs: These FDs offer a tax deduction on the invested amount (up to â‚ą1.5 lakh per year) under Section 80C, but come with a lock-in period of 5 years.

ELSS Mutual Funds: Investing in Equity Linked Saving Schemes (ELSS) through SIPs can be more tax-efficient in the long run. Long-term capital gains from ELSS held for over one year are exempt from tax (up to a certain limit).
